City or beach destination wedding?

For one couple it was a tough decision to make…

Porto is without doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal – a photographer’s dream. Hundreds of years of terracota-topped history tumbling down the steep banks of the river Douro. On the north side is the city of Porto itself, a maze of beautiful old houses, churches and monuments interlaced with tiny cobbled streets. Fresh washing hangs between houses over street-side cafes, tiny boutique shops and galleries. On the south of the river is Vila Nova de Gaia, the home of hundreds of grand, historical Port warehouses where this world famous fortified wine was once loaded onto ships to head out across the Atlantic. Many of these magnificent buildings are still in use today but many have given way to venues for art, music or fine dining.

Presiding over the south bank is the 5 star Yeatman Hotel which provided the perfect start to this wedding adventure. On a warm and sunny September day champagne and sushi canapés were served to the excited couple for an elegant lunch on the garden terrace (which boasts a panoramic view of the city below). The service was impecable, the food delightful (so I was told by the groom) and the champagne perfectly chilled…

After lunch a vintage Bentley arrived to stylishly whisk the couple a few miles up the coast to Azurara beach in Vila do Conde. They were greeted by the friendly staff of the Set Lounge, a luxury ‘Ibiza style’ venue nestled in the sand dunes next to the Rio Ave.  Ridiculously large fruity cocktails were poured as the couple soaked in the surroundings. The afternoon passed lazily with a candy buffet to nibble, more cocktails to drink, plenty of sunshine and  some chilled balearic beats (from the excellent Tiago from Portofiesta). As the sun started to sink into the Atlantic a string quartet (the delightful Adlib) heralded an intimate and romantic ceremony on the beachside boardwalk.

A wedding day should be remembered as something special and with the right ingredients and planning (brilliantly brought together by the amazing Hannah from Premium Event Planners) you don’t have to choose ‘city or beach’. You can have both…
